The Old Postal Route

Connecting the Dots Through Remote South Africa

Words and photography by Simon Pocock

The Old Postal route traditionally runs from the Central Cederberg North East into the Tankwa Karoo, located in the Western Cape of South Africa. We trailered the bikes up to the Cederberg and headed North to Wupperthal and across the (dry) Doring River, before traversing East through the Biedouw Valley into the Tankwa Karoo for three days of dirt riding. We got lucky with an array of moody skies, warm and still evenings along with the blessing of Karoo rain.

Dropping down into the Wupperthal valley.

We were hoping for a river crossing but the Doring River was dry during the harsh summer months.

We speculated for ages as to how and why this bus was sitting in a farmers field in the middle of nowhere. According to the number plate, it was originally registered in Cape Town.

Bernard and Anne joined us for the second night out of the Karoo.

Waiting out the rain.

Home for the night.
