Dunlop Dominates Supercross in 2021

For the twelfth consecutive season, Dunlop riders swept all three championships.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA: The uniquely scheduled 2021 season came to an end in Salt Lake City and marked another milestone in the history of Dunlop’s Supercross racing program: For the twelfth consecutive season, Dunlop riders swept all three championships. A feat that no other tire company has ever come close to.

In the 450 class, the season started with 4 different race winners until Team Honda HRC’s Ken Roczen won 3 races in a row but then Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb went on a mid-season tear. He would win more main events than anyone else and built a massive 22-point lead over Roczen going into Salt Lake City race 2. Webb did what he needed to do at the finale to win his 2nd 450SX championship.

Overall, in the premier 450SX class, Dunlop riders finished in the top 16 positions, once again proving their Dunlop Domination.

In the 250SX East championship, Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha rider Colt Nichols—who was on the inaugural Team Dunlop Elite program back in 2007— had the chance to wrap things up at Salt Lake City race 1 but didn’t push the envelope. Going into the east/west coast shootout with a 23-point lead meant he could just ride smart and take his first championship home.

For the 250SX West championship- long time Dunlop rider, and Nichols Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha teammate, Justin Cooper was in a similar scenario, obtaining a 20-point lead going into the east/west shootout. The New Yorker put his head down to win his first 250SX championship while helping his team clinch both 250SX titles, on Dunlop’s of course.

With Nichols winning his first supercross title, there are now nine Team Dunlop Elite alumni who have won national championships, including Chase Sexton, Aaron Plessinger, Justin Hill, Justin Bogle, Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Blake Baggett and Ashley Fiolek.

“Dunlop would not have a twelve-year win streak without the leadership and hard work of our professional racing management directed by Broc Glover and Brian Fleck as well as all the dedicated fitters on our team,” said Mike Buckley, Dunlop Motorcycle’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “It is also very gratifying to see the Team Dunlop Elite program managed by Rob Fox continue to grow and include so many alumni who have gone on to win professional championships. Supercross riders have a choice in tires, and we want to thank all the riders who chose to race on Dunlop tires in 2021.”
