CAKE, the Swedish manufacturer of lightweight electric off-road performance motorcycles, today announced that the inaugural CAKE Kalk One Design Global Championships will take place as a single event at the Gotland Ring on the island of Gotland, Sweden in summer 2021. The final date will be decided and announced before the end of March.

The first championships will be an invitational, with 16 riders from around the globe from the disciplines of Enduro, Motocross, Supercross, and Downhill Mountain biking. Men and women will race together in a 4X format on a CAKE-specific track built at the Gotland Ring. Furthermore, the event will be raced in Round Robin format, where all riders get a chance to face each other until the semi-finals and finals, then raced in regular Knock Out format.

“The CAKE Kalk One Design race is a 4X (read 4-cross) format. With four racers in each heat racing to qualify. It’s a double elimination concept with winners and losers rounds, to eventually announce a winner,” says event and race coordinator, JP Baralo.

Designed by Swedish Enduro rider Robert Kvarnström, the purpose-built track promises to deliver maximum thrill per meter, perfectly suiting the lightweight agility and performance of the CAKE electric motorcycles. With numerous national Enduro titles under his belt, Kvarnström will be one of the favorites to beat when the 16 riders line up at the start line later this year.

“Our ambition is to bring back motorcycle racing to the masses, fighting the decline in traditional ICE two-wheeled motorsport events. There’s a real possibility to spawn a new spectator-friendly competitive sport. The One Design enables this wonderfully because we can operate professional races in urban locations without noise, minimal disturbance, and zero pollution (70% of tracks around the world have had to close down the past 15 years due to the opposite). Pair this with the limited need for space and the ease of attracting spectators and media, and it’s a game-changer,” commented event creator and organizer and CAKE founder and CEO Stefan Ytterborn. “And, from a broader perspective, with the ease of riding, steep learning curve, and feathery weight, CAKE’s motorcycles are an inclusive way to bring action pursuits to the masses—wherever there is a small piece of land someone can get into the sport. We were fully committed to delivering a race series this year, however as the Coronavirus continues to cause disruption we decided to focus on a single event, a taste of the excitement to come next year!”

For 2022, CAKE is expanding the event into a series of urban races in major cities worldwide called Global City Racing. The race event will take place Thursday through Sunday, in the spirit of fun, excitement, and sustainability.

The one design concept will be restricted to competitors only standard Kalk OR and Kalk INK ORs. Apart from battery swaps, riders will not be allowed to change anything unless it is the same replacement part.

In September 2020, Elektra Future hosted the first CAKE Kalk race in downtown Saint Tropez, France. After a series of qualifying races, final racing kicked off with a direct elimination of one-to-one races. The winner of the first urban race using CAKE Kalks was French former professional motocross racer, Mickaël Maschio.

Moto Guzzi V85 TT Updated for 2021

ENGINES WITH MORE LOW-END AND MEDIUM-RANGE TORQUE, FIVE RIDING MODES, NEW WHEEL RIMS FOR TUBELESS TIRES AND NEW GRAPHICS

2021 is an important time for Moto Guzzi as it celebrates its 100th anniversary. A century of tradition, passion, as well as great commercial and competitive success; one hundred years of magnificent motorcycles that have always been built in Mandello del Lario, combining the best technology and the most valuable Italian manufacturing. Since 1921, these have been Moto Guzzi’s values.

In observance of this tradition, the V85 TT was born, dedicated to adventurous trips, which have always been part of Moto Guzzi heritage, in their purest and most original conception, bringing to mind the strong image of desert competitions like the Paris–Dakar, the famous race, historically held in Africa, which experienced its glory days in the early ‘80s.

The fundamental concepts at the base of the V85 TT are minimalism, ease and practicality, typical of enduro bikes from that decade that could do anything, from daily commuting to adventurous travel, values that are being lost in an increasingly commercial market where the products proposed favor significant sizes and weights. Moto Guzzi V85 TT has achieved the ambitious goal of combining a style based on bringing back those values with the equipment of a modern touring enduro. For this reason, it has earned the title of the first and only classic enduro on the market.

11 V85_TT_2021_Giallo_Mojave (will come standard with bags in North America).jpg

After the success achieved by the V85 TT from press and the general public since its début, for 2021, Moto Guzzi presents, on its MOTOGUZZI.COM web pages, an updated version of its best seller, based on the requests of its fans. The improvements involve primarily the engine. The construction layout is still the exclusive one of all Moto Guzzi bikes currently in production: a 90°, air-cooled V-twin with a pushrod and rockers timing system and two valves per cylinder (intake cylinders in titanium), the pride and tradition of the Mandello Eagle.

The unit now has greater torque at low and medium rpm thanks to optimized lift of the pushrod and rockers timing cams and a consequent adapting of the engine control electronics. The new spoked rims now mount tubeless tires: together, they guarantee about 3.3lbs (1.5 kg) lower weight, reducing the unsprung mass, which further benefits the already outstanding riding dynamic.

As for the riding assist electronics systems, two new Riding Modes (Sport, suitable for more sporty riding and Custom, customizable) join the existing three (Street, Rain, Off-road) to manage traction control, ABS and the response of the Ride-by-Wire throttle. Cruise control and the color TFT instrument panel also come standard. Using Moto Guzzi MIA, the Moto Guzzi multimedia platform optionally available in the vast range of accessories in the dedicated catalog, you can connect your smart phone to the vehicle, extending the instrument panel’s functions.

The two versions of graphics available for the V85 TT Adventure are also new: Giallo Mojave and Rosso Uluru.

V85 TT Travel receives all the technical upgrades of the V85 TT; as in the past, its complete equipment package makes it stand out, preparing it for any trip and including a Touring windscreen, side panniers from the Urban series with high cargo capacity and reduced lateral bulk, the pair of supplementary LED lights and the set of adjustable heated hand grips, as well as the Moto Guzzi MIA multimedia platform.

APRILIA TUONO 660 FINALLY UNVEILED

APRILIA TUONO 660 FINALLY UNVEILED ON THE APRILIA.COM WEBSITE

THE 2021 TUONO 660 IS THE WORTHY CREATION OF THE LEGENDARY TUONO 1100 AND SIBLING TO THE ASTONISHING RS 660 WITH WHICH IT SHARES MOST OF ITS SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCING A NAKED SPORTBIKE UNIQUE IN ITS SEGMENT: LIGHTWEIGHT AND POWERFUL, WITH A 95 HP TWIN-CYLINDER, HIGHLY ADVANCED ELECTRONICS AND A CHASSIS ARCHITECTURE WORTHY OF ITS NAME

The highly anticipated Tuono 660 - on display for its global premiere online at APRILIA.COM - takes the legendary Aprilia Tuono V4 into the medium engine capacity segment.

Worthy child of the unbeatable Tuono V4 1100, the new Tuono 660 combines manageable power and light weight, for great performance available to all, refined chassis architect and an electronic controls package derived directly from the Tuono V4.

Aprilia Tuono 660 embraces the concepts of sporty versatility, ease and fun that Aprilia is introducing for a new generation of riding enthusiasts.

15 Aprilia Tuono 660.jpg

Aprilia was the first to make a sport naked starting from a technical base created for the track, giving the various Tuono 1000cc V-twins and then the generation of unrivalled V4s incomparable riding and performance qualities.

And so, the new Aprilia RS 660 sport bike is also born out of the Tuono 660, a sport naked version characterized by ultra-high technical content, but with an even more extreme street and daily-use connotation thanks, first and foremost, to the higher riding position which makes for different ergonomics, as well as a natural and comfortable ride.

Aprilia Tuono 660 also shares the primary project objective with RS 660: creating a bike with an extraordinary weight/power ratio: 183 kg (403 lbs) curb weight for 95 HP of power. A category record, which represents the ideal formula for fun on the road, accessible to everyone. Tuono 660 is dedicated to new riders, but also for younger riders who are moving up from smaller engine capacities looking for a high-level sport naked that can provide fun on the road and is also ready to support the rider on the occasional track day.

Tuono 660 has that same aggressive and sporty style as the Tuono family, standing out for its reduced surface dimensions that enhance that dynamic and sport-derived character it has, even when its parked. Like the RS 660, the new Tuono also adopts the innovative concept of the double fairing with aerodynamic appendix function, born out of increasingly more in-depth research in the wind tunnel, as well as the triple LED headlight unit featuring DRL lights.

Tuono 660 boasts a magnificent structure committed to light weight made up of the frame and swingarm, both in die-cast aluminum. The adjustable Kayaba suspension system has a dedicated set-up.

The high handlebar and the chassis architecture measurements differentiate Tuono 660 from the RS, benefiting total control, responsiveness and agile handling, thanks to a different offset of the fork plate.

The engine is used as a bearing element and contributes to forming a compact, lightweight and stiff structure. The latest generation forward-facing twin cylinder, small and lightweight, is a child of the experience gained on the powerful Aprilia V4, from which its construction philosophy and basic technical concepts are drawn. The 270° combustion timing allows that character and grit that riders love so much to be achieved. The final drive is shorter than that of the RS 660, privileging responsiveness and quickness.

Its electronics are top of the class, more advanced than various superbike class bikes: the Ride-by-Wire electronic accelerator provides the best management of the APRC electronic controls suite that includes multi-level traction control, anti-wheelie control, cruise control, engine brake and selectable engine maps, also joined by the ABS system. To easily manage all the electronic controls through the color TFT instrumentation, Aprilia has fine-tuned five Riding Modes (three dedicated to road riding and two for the track): the rider just needs to choose the option that best interprets his or her riding style, always leaving the possibility of customizing them.

Tuono 660 will be available in three color variants: Concept Black, Iridium Grey and the brand new and attractive Acid Gold, already popular on the RS 660, a color never before seen in the motorcycling world which sets new style standards to interpret sportiness in an original and innovative way and to never go unnoticed.

Availability: End of Q1 2021, US and Canada

Price: US $10,499 / $10,699 (Acid Gold)

Canada $12,795 / $13,095 (Acid Gold)

Healthcare Worker Wins Dunlop’s Humble Heroes

Healthcare Worker Darwin Longfellow Wins Dunlop’s Humble Heroes 2020 Harley-Davidson XL1200 Sportster Roadster

Rancho Cucamonga, CA: To thank healthcare workers and first responders for their heroic actions during the pandemic, Dunlop asked people to nominate their own Humble Hero for the chance to win a 2020 XL1200 Sportster Roadster. The uplifting stories reminded us of the power of the human spirit, of what selfless dedication and compassion really look like.

humble-heroes.jpg

Choosing a winner among all the submissions was not easy, but the story of new Physician Assistant Darwin Longfellow stood out. She was nominated by several different people. She even worked with the city of Taos, New Mexico, to make a cool video starring her and her horse encouraging folks in her community to mask-up when asked. She spends what little time off she has riding motorcycles.

“We started this campaign to honor all essential workers across America, including our many workers in Buffalo, New York, who masked-up and came in to keep bikes rolling,” said Mike Buckley, Senior VP, Sales and Marketing, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires. “We quickly realized the impact the pandemic had on first responders, so we focused on giving something back to them to honor their efforts. We chose Darwin, but we wish we could choose all of them because they are all heroes. Her story just hit all of us the hardest.”

Here’s what a few of Longfellow’s admirers had to say about her.

“I couldn’t think of a better person to nominate for this than the one and only Darwin Longfellow,” said colleague Brooke Samples. “She is incredible for so many reasons, but especially when she was truly put to the test of being a new graduate as a Physician Assistant in the time of COVID. She was the only clinician at her location working full time through the entire pandemic and continues to do so.

“When her colleagues were afraid of becoming sick and insisting on only doing phone visits, Darwin was standing in a hot blacktop parking lot in the middle of the summer, overheating in mask, gown, face shield and gloves, explaining CDC guidelines to her community members in easy-to-understand terms. She also did COVID testing clinics during summer monsoons and insane wind bursts in Taos.”

—Brooke Samples

“When I first met Darwin Longfellow, it was all about motorcycles. We shared a love of the open road, and the wonders of the desert on two wheels. I learned that Darwin had recently graduated from a Physician Assistant program and was working in a health clinic in rural Northern New Mexico. I was immediately impressed by her passionate dedication to her work, and we became fast friends.

“In addition to daily COVID-19 test screenings, Darwin provides safety-net care for patients with needs regarding pregnancy, Diabetes, Hepatitis C, and drug addiction. The clinic operates in one of the most impoverished areas of the United States and provides care regardless of ability of a patient to pay, which protects the uninsured, underinsured, and undocumented.

“Darwin loves the open road, and once told me that, ‘Being motorcycle people, we love to move on.’ When the work is done and Darwin can resume her pre-pandemic routine, I can’t think of a better way for her to ‘move on’ than to hit the roads of Northern New Mexico on a new Harley-Davidson.”

—Scott Toepfer

“As a fellow healthcare provider, I have been humbled by Darwin’s selfless service to her patients. She has met her community where they are, and cared for them with limited resources and support, working diligently to practice preventive medicine and protect her community both within and outside of the clinic. In a group that prides itself on service to others, she, without a doubt, stands among the highest tier.”

— Kelley Rutter

“During the start of COVID, she was the first-person doing testing in our community open to any and all who wanted to be tested. She put herself in danger to help people. Darwin has put her life aside in order to assure others are being taken care of during these hard times. I wish I could just insert her in this essay so y'all could meet her in person. Knowing her is loving her. She is such a badass young woman with so much to give in this world.”
